I think this is an important point. As I understand it, many knowledge management systems failed because they depended on making people do something for the organisation that did not benefit them personally. The best approach is to build both the ‘selfish’ and ‘community’ benefits into the same application. Del.icio.us does this very well: you manage your own bookmarks more conveniently with it than by using your browser’s local database; but others can see and navigate them too. The selfish act gives rise to a general good. Isn’t that what capitalists call ‘enlightened self interest’?
