Jack, I have used these lenses in part to approach similar how you frame “Undesirable Effects”, but also to help people understand the bread, distinctions, progressions of uses over time, and types of uses for social tools. Helping people think beyond the initial out of the box uses, but what it looks like in information, project, communication, etc. life cycles. Like stated in the Social Scaling and Maturity blog post, many don’t think beyond that second phase, which many organizations start running up against in 6 months of use, if they selected a tool that fit their needs and culture, implemented it well, and planned the launch with community management follow-up and guidance long term. But, many orgs I talk to didn’t think beyond some check boxes and have solutions that don’t fit and really can’t be called solutions.Helping organization sort out what happened when they are stuck is often when I get tapped to help. Often they don’t have budget, but are trying to sort out what happened and what is salvageable. Most often I in talking with them 30 minutes to an hour they find out some basics of social tools they had never heard or considered that would have very well altered their choice or had them better prepared. Most of the mid-tier vendors really get this stuff right not only in their products but in their interactions with clients. Socialtext, Traction, and ThoughtFarmer are not tools I run into with clients with issues as their teams are good sorting out how to work with clients that are good fits for what they offer.Helping orgs understand their needs, culture (social culture, how they work, and restrictions (regulatory, oversight, etc.) is the first step to sorting out potential tools and what tools clearly to stay away from. The list of 40 plus social lenses are there to get people thinking about what will and may surface, what are the it depends questions, what happens 6 months to 2 years into use of social tools (it is very different from the start). But, businesses change from the use of the tools as well, but that change is far from consistent and their are a lot of influences into the direction(s) those changes will take.
